The con of neutrality

img_2906

Okay, so I received this definition from Wikipedia.com (yaAaS I use wiki, judgmental free zone). However..

Wiki defines The bystander effect: The bystander effect or bystander apathy, is a social psychological phenomenon in which individuals are less likely to offer help to a victim when other people are present. The greater the number of bystanders, the less likely it is that any one of them will help.

The quote included in the photo above is something from actress, Anne Hathaway that reposted on my MyStory on Instagram (@Hamncheezy).

“If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.”-Desmond TuTu

Not doing anything… not acknowledging white privilege-while living in and benefiting from it. This neutrality …not disliking or having anything against another person because of their race is great. However, CHOOSING  to not speak up against injustices imposed upon minorities directly plays into this notion of white privilege. White people date, MARRY, have close friendships, adopt and work with as many Black and Brown people as they want. HOWEVER, if you are living and breathing this bystander affect, just watching along with everyone else and benefiting from white privilege.. you’re choosing the side of the oppressor.
